Four people were on the bus that night: the driver, two girls, and a man. The girls went to school together and were going to their friend Tina's house to spend the night. They were at the mall together for the day and were having such fun that they stayed until it closed. They sat in the third row together, joking around excitedly about the great time they were expecting for the rest of the night. The man, who sat in the second-to-last row of seats alone, coughed—a cough that sounded like a choke. One of the girls, Mary, turned to look at the source of the noise and saw the man slouched in his seat with a wide-brim hat covering his face. He looked up and appeared to be an older man with glasses. He began to smile—a nervous, fake smile that turned into a scowl as it appeared his skin had seemingly turned gray. The lights in the bus suddenly flickered, and it went pitch black.
Nobody screamed; silence continued to fill the air. Mary began to laugh for some reason. Maybe it was the sound the cough made in the mere seconds of silence between their prior giggles to each other, which had not seemed as strange and interruptive earlier. Or the expression on his face when he looked up. She began to laugh harder, uncontrollably. She was feeling strange, like her every thought was being expressed out loud for all to hear. A feeling of anxiety led to more silence throughout the bus. She turned to her friend Stevie, and through the dim streetlights, she could make out the silhouette of her looking out the window. Now feeling panicked, she shook Stevie, who then fell over on Mary's lap with her eyeballs seemingly missing from her sockets and without consciousness. She screamed, then looked back down to see the face of the man on Stevie's body as he began to laugh!
Mary rushed out of the seat to run to the door while screaming for the driver to stop and let her out. As she was pounding on the door, Mary wondered why he hadn't said anything. She looked towards the driver's seat and saw nobody there, yet the bus propelled forward at a seemingly accelerated rate! Mary pounded on the door even more furiously until she felt a tap on her shoulder. She slowly turned her head back, and facing her was the man with the gray skin and his fingers clawing towards her eyes! But before she could have another thought, the bus met a concrete building at full force, putting an end to Mary's nightmare, as she woke up in Tina's bedroom in her sleeping bag with a gasp and then a sigh of relief. Terrified yet amused by the story, she wanted to wake one of her friends to tell the story. She shook Stevie, and as she rolled over, it was revealed she had gray skin and missing eyeballs!! Stevie opened her mouth and SPIDERS CAME OUT AS SHE SCREAMED!!
"Dennison's Bogie Book" was an annual publication released by Dennison Paper Products between the 1910s and 1930s that contained information on planning halloween celebrations and halloween craft projects. They were one of the first companies to sell halloween decorations! The 1920 edition is in the public domain and can be read here courtesy of the U.S Library of Congress. Although over 100 years old, some ideas may be fun to try, if not to laugh at the archaic nature for some of the suggestions.
