"Soul-Cakes" are small spiced round cakes that resemble a shortbread biscuit and were an important part of traditional Halloween celebrations. 'Soulers': the medieval equivalent to a trick-or-treater would go door to door of wealthy individuals and ask for soul-cakes in exchange for a prayer for the dead. Children and the poor would sing once they reached the doors, just like saying "trick-or-treat" today. Some places still celebrate this tradition during the Halloween season to this day!
